The Past, Present and Future of the Superior School District

Past

According to the First Annual Report of the Board of Education of the City of Superior, for the School and Fiscal Year ending June 30, 1893, the district’s annual budget was $156,444.90; the number of children over the age of four and under the age of 20, taught in the public schools of the city, by duly qualified teachers, was 3,986; the total number of teachers employed in the district was 93; and the average salary paid to male teachers was $650 and female, $560.  The average life of a textbook was about four years.  Music was taught in all schools except the kindergartens.  One hundred and forty-nine pupils were enrolled in the High School classes.

The School District of Superior is currently the 23rd largest school district in the State of Wisconsin.  The district is made up of eight school buildings-- six elementaries, one middle school and one high school.  The School District of Superior offers excellent programs for children pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The district’s mission is to provide all children with the relevant tools to develop a foundation for living, learning and working successfully.

Future
On April 5, 2016, voters approved a $92.5 million bond referendum to construct and equip an addition to and improvements at Superior High School, build a new elementary school to replace the existing Cooper Elementary School, and various improvements at the elementary schools and Superior Middle School including roof repairs/replacement, paving, secure entrances and technology and equipment.
